TRIPPING WITH ZORBA
Intimate stories from time spent with Anthony Quinn over a 2 year period in the 90’s are condensed into one captivating day with the legendary actor.
THE TURBULENT SIXTIES were over, but New York City in the early 70's could find no relief. The city was on the verge of bankruptcy. Crime was rampant with widespread poverty. Pimps, hookers and drug dealers ruled the streets. There was no person alive in the Big Apple who felt it more than actor Anthony Quinn. The dirt-poor immigrant who rose against insurmountable odds to become one of Hollywood's top leading men and an international superstar. A man who seemingly had everything, was now questioning his own existence.
As chance would have it, Tony is introduced to a gifted but troubled musician, Joey Maggio. Joey is the son of Tony's bookkeeper, a doting mother who is worried that her teenage son is headed in the wrong direction. She has aspirations of him going to Julliard School on a scholarship, but having lost his father at a young age, Joey is adrift with delusions of becoming a rock star.
SO TONY INTERVENES and invites Joey on a day trip to the beach and boardwalk in Coney Island. The generation gap is brutally evident from the start. They clash over just about every- thing. Old school meets new school. Their competitive nature brings out the worst and best in them. It's a roller-coaster ride with each one trying to outsmart and outdo the other.
AS THE DAY WEARS ON, Tony gradually begins to break through the emotional walls on Joey as he is embellished with tales of his past adventures in the film trade, the great triumphs and bitter disappointments, and the devastating loss of his own father at a very young age. Here they connect on a much deeper level of understanding that is usually reserved for displaced fathers and sons. The struggle to let go of the past and love unconditionally. It's a game-changing experience that can only be found under the mystical stars of Coney Island.
THE JOURNEY culminates with two old souls finding some greater awakening in an ever-changing, unpredictable world.
